On June 28, 2018 we had lunch at Woodpecker at 30W 30th street. We ordered Tuna Crudo, Broccoli Mops & Guacamole, Margherita Pizza, Artichoke Mozzarella Pie, Cavatelli, Woodfired Salmon, Woodfired Chicken, Dry Aged Cheeseburger.

  • Cavetelli, cooked properly with a nice mushroom sauce and tomatoes 9/10
  • Chicken with couscous was perfectly cooked, nice tangy surprise. Chicken seems like cooked in the pizza oven in woodfire juice and tasty. 9/10
  • Tuna Crudo; was missing citrus taste, it was a simple dish but tasteless. However nicely presented over avocado. 7/10
  • Broccoli and guacamole; very unique use of ingredients, excellent flavor and served cold. Broccoli was steamed prior, fired quinoa and citrus fennel was very unique touch. 10/10
  • Pizza; they have 2 of woodfired pizza oven therefore their pizza dough and pizza were very tasty, we tried most basic pizza which is Margherita I prefer with olive oil and balsamic but there wasnt on the table. Thin pizza wood fired flavor a tasty treat. Served on a small tray sitting on a 1-gallon paint can. 9/10
  • Salmon; nicely cooked but had a farm raised taste from east coast. It was served with beet, gem lettuce, carrots and pistachio. 7/10 because of farm raised salmon.
  • Cheeseburger was one of the tasteless hamburger I have eaten. The potatoes were chunks crunchy and were the best thing in the plate. When I saw in the menu aged meet I was exited but it is obvious that it is not cooked by an appropriate method. They should take this off the menu or cooked better. 3/10 because of potatoes.

Atmosphere- lunch was full for one serving. The place was set simple over a wood table top. Cloth napkins was nice touch. Music should be softer, very hip hop, no sound deadening.

Celebrity chef David Burke was sitting at the bar when we arrived it is nice too see him at his restaurant top of the business.

Coffee, drip was weak, bitter on the back end. When milk added was truly tasteless
Tea-Smith from Portland OR. Freshly packed individually
Fresh fruit plate wasnt in the menu but made to order, was very fresh and refreshing.

Desserts
  • Apple tart; wonderfully presented with a Spicy Smokey taste, and caramel sauce a nice flavor 10/10 burning embers under the plastic cover.
  • Crme Brulee; the taste is spot on but like a stiffer center 8/10
  • Peanut butter cream cake; which suggested by waiter wasnt our favorite, it was totally over sweet.

Down sides of the restaurant are:
  • Ceiling- was painted Grey and plumbing and HVAC left as is. Nice look but acoustics were bad
  • The staff was either hard of hearing or the music too loud.

Some of the food was very good but some items are really not good has to be taking off the menu. They have 2 woodfired pizza oven and my personal opinion they have to do much more with those ovens.
