Kart's Deli is NYC's oldest deli and has been a staple in New York City since its founding. The story began in 1888 when the Iceland brothers established a small deli on Ludlow Street in New York’s Lower East Side.
In the early twentieth century, the Lower East Side was a hub for newly immigrated families, and Katz's Delicatessen became a central gathering spot in the community. Each week, thousands of visitors from around the world flock to Katz's to experience their legendary sandwiches, platters, and meats.
I visited their newest location in the City Point Building in Brooklyn, situated in the food hall on the lower floor. This location is less busy than the original, but the quality and tradition remain the same. Katz's cures their meat and slow-cooks it, ensuring the quality is evident in every bite. All their cuts are hand-sliced in front of the customer. In 2024, an average sandwich costs around $26, which is pricier than other delis but justified by their exceptional products.
Katz's Delicatessen is not just a tourist attraction but also a favorite among locals, solidifying its place as a must-visit spot in New York City.
