ISKENDER Botanik Park / Iskender Efendi Konagi
Iskender kebap (Alexander kebab) is one of the most famous meat dish in Turkey and takes its name from its inventor, Iskender (Alexander), who lived in Bursa in the late 19th century.
The dish consists of doner (or Gyro / shawarma) prepared from thinly cut grilled lamb and beef topped with hot tomato sauce over pieces of pita bread and generously slathered with melted sheep butter and yogurt. Additionally, one cylindrical kofte (Turkish meatball) can be placed on top. It is commonly consumed with Sira (Turkish non-alcoholic drink made from slightly fermented grape juice) as a drink to aid digestion. Tomato sauce and melted butter are generally poured over the dish, at the table.
"Kebapci Iskender" is trademarked by the Iskenderoglu family, who still run the restaurant in Bursa. Even all restaurants names are same their owners are different but they are relatives. This dish is available in many restaurants throughout the country mostly under the name "Iskender kebap".
I been in this restaurant many time, they always busy nerveless they serve your food after take your order in very fast. Ingredients make this dish perfect taste and for sure it is unique Turkish food. Even you can find in Greek food; Gyro and Arabic food; Shawarma, Iskender is totally different then those and much more elevated dish. You can have doner, gyro and shawarma even Iskender many places in the world, but I sure you nothing like the one they serve in this restaurant.
If you visiting this beautiful country please visit to Bursa which is couple hours away from Istanbul and don't leave the country without trying Iskender kebap. It is defiantly wort to try.
